Nicole Ari Parker is an American stage and film actress who is known for her role as the fiery attorney Teri Joseph on the Showtime series Soul Food. Nikki Kodjoe became her stage name upon her marriage. Her birthplace and childhood was within Baltimore Maryland. As an infant, she showed an aptitude for acting. She received the Top Actress Award in a Maryland High School Contest. In the years following her work in theater, as well as 'The Washington Ballet Company' she graduated with a degree in acting from 'New York University. Her first major role as a character in The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love was a success and earned her immense admiration. The family was born in Mumbai, India and raised in Nigeria until the age of seven, Contractor was well-versed in world travels and a variety of different cultures from a young age. She attended boarding school in London from seven to nine years old, then her family relocated into Toronto, Canada, where she spent the majority of her youth and early adulthood. Then, in Toronto, Contractor excelled in academics and became a classical ballerina. She attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, a school of the arts which focuses on theater and dance. Contractor took the decision to study acting more seriously at the age of 16, after ten year of dance. When she completed high school, she won an all-inclusive scholarship to the University of Toronto. At the University of Toronto she completed a Masters in Theatre and was also a double major in sociology and psychology. Contractor got her first part following her first year at university. In 2002, Canadian critics praised her performance in 92 productions of the play. Contractor was given the chance to take part in the conservatory program, where only eight males and four females are selected for a course lasting 20 weeks in classical theatre, which she eagerly took. Contractor was offered a place for the next season, and was offered the role of Hermia.
